A Sweet Partnership
School, Chocolate Company Team up to Tell the MHS Story
On Oct. 6, Milton Hershey SchoolŽ and The Hershey Company (THC) marked a new partnership designed to increase awareness of the School when THC hosted a national media event in New York. The event featured a showing of the MHS documentary, "Living the Legacy: The Untold Story of Milton Hershey School."
In creating the documentary, Academy AwardŽ-winning filmmaker Cynthia Wade spent a year following the lives of several new MHS students, capturing the realities families face - including the emotional struggles and conflict - as the children leave home for a new life of the MHS campus. It explores the sometimes desperate situations that lead parents to seek a better place for their children and the emotional turmoil that can occur. The result is an honest look at the journey parents, students, and alumni take on the road to building better lives through Mr. and Mrs. Hershey's extraordinary gift.
The documentary will premiere nationally on IFC at 9:30 PM Monday, Nov. 9. The film also will air on the Sundance Channel beginning in early 2010.
As part of the partnership, MHS and THC have launched a joint website, which tells the story of MHS and the relationship between the School and the chocolate company. Stories of alumni success help consumers understand how the School fulfills its mission to "nurture and educate children in social and financial need to lead fulfilling and productive lives" and helps consumers understand how Hershey product sales support the School and contribute to helping children move from poverty toward higher education, strong families, community commitment.
